To all the magnificent mothers out there…

As Mother’s Day approaches each year, a flurry of emotions fills the heart of Jessica Murray.

For some mothers, Mother’s Day can be a painful reminder of loss and memories past. Others will celebrate their first Mother’s Day excitedly as new mothers.

Even though Mother’s Day is observed at different times of the year around the world, every celebration has one thing in common: showing mothers how much you love them. After all everyone has a mother or has someone who is like a mother to them.

There’s always a subtle uneasiness mingled with excitement as Mother’s Day approaches for me. It’s a reminder of the expectations and surprises that can come with the day. Sweet, homemade ‘Love You Mum’ cards from the kids, flowers from the garden, and breaky in bed. Like clockwork, my thoughts flit to the logistics—maybe reservations to be made, gifts to be chosen for my mum—and the gentle worry over those who may find this day more bitter than sweet.

In my own childhood, my mother was my world. Her presence, her wisdom, her love—these were the constants in my life. I trailed after her like a shadow, eager to soak up every moment, every word. Our bond, imperfect as it may be, has weathered storms and flourished in sunlight, a testament to the resilience of maternal love.

Yet, in the tapestry of maternal lineage, there are threads of sorrow, too. My mother, like many, lost her own mother too soon, leaving behind a void that could never be filled. Despite this loss, she has woven tales of her mother’s strength and grace, painting a portrait of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

So, as Mother’s Day dawns once again, I find solace in honouring the women who have shaped me. To my own mother, I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude for her unwavering love and guidance. And to the myriad of maternal figures who have left their mark on my life, I offer my heartfelt appreciation.

This Mother’s Day, let us set aside the trappings of expectation and instead focus on the essence of motherhood—the fierce love, the quiet sacrifices, the unspoken bonds. May we celebrate not only the joys but also the complexities of motherhood, honouring the resilience and strength that define us all.

To all the magnificent mothers out there, I wish you a day filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments. Happy Mother’s Day.
