01 May Why Walking to School Is One of the Healthiest Habits You Can Teach Your Child
National Walk Safely to School Day is on Friday, 16 May 2025,
If there’s one easy habit that can make a huge difference to your child’s health, happiness, and focus at school, it’s walking.
As the 26th annual National Walk Safely to School Day approaches on Friday, 16 May 2025, parents and carers across Australia are being reminded of the powerful benefits of walking as a daily routine, not just for one day, but all year round.
Backed by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, this national initiative encourages families to build walking into the school day, helping children take important steps towards a healthier and more independent future.
The Simple Routine That Supports Fitness, Focus, and Friendship
Walking regularly has long been linked to better physical health, but research shows it also supports cognitive development and academic performance in children. It improves mood, concentration, and even social connection—kids who walk together often talk more and build friendships on the move.
With 1 in 4 Aussie children facing obesity, daily movement is more important than ever. According to Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, “The best exercise for all Australians is walking regularly. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.”
Whether it’s a short walk from home or part of a “park and walk” routine, encouraging kids to move more each day can build habits that last a lifetime.
How Parents Can Lead the Way to Safer, Greener School Mornings
There’s another significant benefit too—walking reduces car traffic and congestion around schools, making drop-off zones safer for everyone. The event also urges families to consider using public transport more and reducing car dependency for short trips.
For families with younger kids, safety comes first. “Until they are 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road,” says Scruby. Parents walking with their children aren’t just supporting health—they’re modelling road safety and building essential skills.
Schools and P&CS are also encouraged to participate by hosting a Healthy Breakfast on the day, reinforcing the link between nutritious food, exercise, and learning.
So, whether you walk the whole way or just part of the way, take the opportunity this May—and beyond—to create a routine that benefits your kids, your family, and your community.
