01 Aug Getting Organised for your own Olympic Celebrations
Why not try organising a sports day for the kids? And you never know. Some of the more unusual sports just might kindle your child’s dream of being an Olympian!
This year’s Olympics in Paris will showcase 32 different sports, including skateboarding, weightlifting, equestrian, surfing, and—making its Olympic debut—breaking.
For ideas about what to include when organising a sports day for the kids, visit the Australian Olympic Committee’s web pages, where you will find lots of interesting resources, including a TeamAus Olympic giveaway (we’ve included the details below).
Ideas for organising your own Olympic celebrations:
- Make an Olympic torch and talk about the history of it.
- Don’t forget to organise the medals.
- And include flags for the different countries.
Learning more about the traditions and cultures of all the participating countries and finding them all in one place every four years for the Summer Olympics is a wonderful motivator for kids to look outside their own world. Just looking at all those flags from participating countries is an eye-opener!
- Try mapping the various locations of the Olympic Games host cities around the world. Or locating on a map where the competitors from the dfferent sports come from.
Let the Games Begin!
Interactive games and challenges can easily fuel your kids’ interest in sports.

If you’ve got a group, divide the kids into “countries” (teams) and begin the fun with a flag ceremony to start your Olympic day off! Rotate the teams between activities to keep the fun going.
