Are you looking for new shoes for your child?

Specialists recommend you consider the following when shopping for school shoes especially for your child:

  • Shoes with arch support and cushioning will protect the joints and ligaments throughout a range of activities, by distributing pressure across the foot.

  • Adjustable fastening mechanisms (such as velcro or elastic laces) are great, especially for younger children. The fit can be adjusted to suit the individual. Shoes which are slightly too big can cause the child to claw their toes, and an adjustable fastening mechanism can avoid this from taking place.

  • Shoes should be made from breathable material such as leather or mesh. Water-resistance is also preferable for sports shoes. The more breathable the shoes, the more the child is protected from blisters and fungal infections.

  • Allow your child to walk a little in the shoe before you buy. Keep an eye on the heel and whether it is leaning in or out/slipping up or down. Unstable heels can lead to discomfort and posture problem.

  • School shoes should have robust rubber soles and well-constructed midsoles which will help with the shock-absorption that is part of an active school day.

  • Feet should be carefully measured, from the length of the longest toe.

  • Always check the fit of both feet in the shoes. Most of us have one foot slightly longer than the other.

  • Shoes should fit no more than one space from the longest toe.

  • If your child is wearing insoles or orthotics, now is the time for a review. Children’s feet grow constantly into their late teens and their orthotics may be too small or worn out.
