06 Nov Keeping Kids Safe: What Parents Can Learn from the Four Corners Report
The recent Four Corners investigation into Australia’s childcare system has uncovered deeply troubling gaps in child safety. Experts say it’s a wake-up call for all of us — parents, carers and educators — to do more to protect children from harm.
When Systems Fail, Communities Must Step Up
Act for Kids CEO Dr Katrina Lines says the Four Corners revelations have exposed serious failings in how we protect children.
“As a community, we can and must do better,” she says. “Every child deserves to feel safe, supported and cared for — always.”
Dr Lines says while governments must act urgently to strengthen checks and training, families and communities also have a vital role to play.
“There’s no single fix,” she adds. “Real change starts with awareness, education, and everyday conversations that help children understand their right to feel safe.”
Act for Kids continues to call for consistent, nationwide standards — including mandatory protective-behaviour education in every early learning setting.
Three Simple Ways to Help Keep Kids Safe
Parents and carers are often a child’s first line of protection. Act for Kids suggests starting with these simple steps at home:
-
Teach consent early. Use the correct names for body parts and help kids understand their right to say “no” if something feels wrong.
-
Talk about safe touch. Everyday moments, like bath time or dressing, are opportunities to explain safe versus unsafe touch in calm, reassuring ways.
-
Keep the conversation going. Let your child know they can talk to you — or another trusted adult — anytime something doesn’t feel right.
If you ever feel worried about a child, it’s always okay to speak up.
Report concerns to your local child protection authority, or call 000 in an emergency.
