Looking for some movies for the days when the holidays have become too much and a little quiet time is required?
Here are a few new family movies out this September and October.
Streaming or Movies at home?
Parents can now check Flicks online to help solve the universal pain point of not knowing what to watch. Flick’s partnership with Children and Media Australia is a step to help time-poor parents discover the best and most suitable movies for children.
The Children and the Media reviews describe a movie’s plot and list the content that can scare, is violent, and deals with mature themes, sexual references and other problematic issues. The reviewers, who all have expertise in child development, provide an age recommendation – this is the age from which children are most likely to enjoy the movie without risk of harm.

Transformers One (PG)
This is the untold origin story of how Optimus Prime and Megatron, known now as sworn enemies, were once brothers. It’s an animated science fiction action film based on Hasbro’s Transformers toy line and featuring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Laurence Fishburne, Brian Tyree Henry.
Wild Robot (PG)
The Wild Robot is an American animated science fiction survival film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown. Written in 2016, it was nominated for Best Children’s Book and has been made into an animated film. (The Wild Robot Escapes is the sequel book, which is bound to appear as a movie soon!)
Runt (PG)
‘Runt’ is a book by Craig Silvey and was the winner of the 2023 CBCA Book of the Year, Younger Readers award. It is now adapted into a film about eleven-year-old Annie Shearer and her best friend Runt, an adopted stray dog with remarkable abilities. Runt will only obey Annie’s commands if nobody else is watching, and the pair of them must beat the odds and the fastest dogs in the world to save Annie’s family farm.
The Lion King 30th Anniversary re-release (G) (Village Cinemas)
A treacherous Uncle tricks a Lion cub crown prince into thinking he caused his father’s death and flees into exile in deep despair, only to learn in adulthood his true identity and responsibilities. Much loved and populated with catchy songs, this re-release is just right for a new audience.
Bookworm (PG)
Eleven-year-old Mildred’s life is turned upside down when her stressed out, strapped-for-cash single mum lands in hospital and her estranged father, Strawn Wise (Elijah Wood) – a has-been American illusionist – flies to New Zealand to look after her. Themes of fatherhood, survival and overcoming your fears, and with the rugged Southern New Zealand landscape as its backdrop, Bookworm will make you laugh, cry and warm your heart as it takes you on the adventure of a lifetime.
Harold and the Purple Crayon (PG)
An essential Picture Book classic – Harold And The Purple Crayon (written 1955 by Crockett Johnson), has also been a ballet and has now been brought from the book’s page (literally jumping off the page) to become a magical movie story.
Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, Harold draws himself to a landscape full of beauty and excitement. He conducts his adventure with the utmost care, letting his imagination run free but keeping his wits about him all the while. This magical journey gives us the wondrous sense that anything is possible.
Coco (PG) (out in Oct)
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. This Adventure Comedy is an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
