22 May Chasing the Endless Summer: One Family’s Search for a Holiday That Works
Felicity Thomas seeks to make family holiday memories that last a lifetime
The Allure of Escape
A stronger Australian dollar and a cooler Melbourne winter approaching had me browsing holiday deals to warm, exotic destinations. But then reality struck—my husband and I have a toddler.
I know plenty of families tackle big trips with young kids in tow. But I just didn’t think we were ready.
Our First Family Getaway
We did manage a sunshine escape to Queensland during our son’s first year. But much of our travel wishlist went untouched.
Maybe it was because we were first-time parents. Or maybe it was because we already knew how cranky our little man could get without sleep. So, we mostly stayed indoors, reading books. We did squeeze in some exploring during his awake times and even ventured out one evening to enjoy some excellent local fare while he slept peacefully in the pram.
Road Tripping with a Toddler
At a recent dinner party, conversation turned to surviving long drives with kids. Portable DVD players and car snacks got a mention, and then someone turned to me: “Wait—haven’t you driven interstate with your toddler?”
Yes. Yes, we have.
In fact, we’ve tackled three interstate road trips during our son’s first two years—not so much for fun, but because most of our friends and family live far away. So, driving four or more hours is our norm.
The Epic Drives
One trip was a whirlwind: Melbourne to Adelaide and back in two days for a best friend’s wedding. Thanks to lots of singing, teddy bear distractions and playground pit stops, we made it through.
Another time, we drove 13 hours to go camping with friends. With our son down to just one nap a day, we thought we had it covered. But teething, heat and a week in a hot tent made for an exhausting trip. I found myself walking quiet country roads at 6 am, trying to stay positive and appreciate the early morning beauty, long before anyone else on holiday was even stirring.
A Small Victory
Our most recent attempt has given us hope. We drove just three hours from home, stayed in a cottage with another family, and embraced the comforts of modern life.
We shared costs, helped each other with child-minding and meals, and even squeezed in a few outings with our son in a hiking backpack. There were early-morning walks and a few real moments of rest. Maybe, just maybe, not every holiday is doomed to end in sleep-deprived chaos.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
In many ways, these trips remind me of my own childhood—driving along the east coast to visit relatives, punctuated by the occasional cabin stay or cottage rental to keep things interesting.
Who knows where our next family holiday will take us? Maybe somewhere close, maybe further afield. But one thing’s for sure: I’ll keep chasing the sun, and despite the bumps along the road, we’ll be making memories that last a lifetime.
