03 Apr Free Online Parenting Program Supports Families of Children with Disability
This program equips parents and caregivers with tools and strategies for supporting their child with a disability.
Immediate Help for Families Facing Long Wait Times
Families of children with disability struggling with long wait times for diagnosis and support now have access to Stepping Stones Triple P Online—a free, evidence-based parenting program funded by the Australian Government. The program offers practical strategies to help children thrive while reducing stress and enhancing parental confidence.
According to Triple P International Country Director, Carol Markie-Dadds, approximately 1 in 13 Australian children (around 356,000 aged 0 to 14) live with disability. Many families face challenges accessing support due to workforce shortages, long waiting lists, and financial pressures, leaving parents feeling overwhelmed.
“Early intervention through parenting programs provides families with immediate tools to understand and support their child,” Ms Markie-Dadds said. Research across NSW, Victoria, and Queensland found that Stepping Stones Triple P significantly improves family relationships, reduces stress, and enhances children’s emotional and behavioural well-being.
Practical Strategies for Parents and Carers
The program is particularly beneficial for neurodiverse children, including those diagnosed with autism and ADHD. It helps parents and carers:
- Build their child’s independence and self-care skills
- Manage daily routines, socialising, and mealtimes with confidence
- Support their child’s emotional and behavioural development
- Reduce stress and improve their own mental well-being
- Improve communication within the family
Ms Markie-Dadds highlighted the mental health risks for carers, with parents of children with disability reporting twice the stress levels of other parents. “When families feel confident in managing daily life, the entire household benefits,” she said.
Dr Kate Liley, AEIOU Foundation Head of Research, welcomed the initiative, noting that families of autistic children face unique challenges. The flexibility of an online program removes barriers for parents unable to attend in-person sessions, especially those in regional and remote areas.
Real-Life Impact: Confidence for a Lifetime
Brisbane mum Rachel completed the program when her son, Jason, was diagnosed with autism at age three. “I still use what I learned daily. It gives you lifelong confidence and a toolbox for parenting,” she said. “Making this program free for families is life-changing.”
With over 25 years of research, Stepping Stones Triple P has already supported more than 100,000 parents in face-to-face sessions and nearly half a million families across Australia. Parents and carers can choose the tools that best fit their family’s needs, because even small changes can make a big difference.
