Groundbreaking Art program reducing anxiety in children

An Art Therapy Program organised by the Black Dog Institute and Art Gallery of New South Wales, found to reduce anxiety in children by 29%

Creative Solutions to Childhood Anxiety

A groundbreaking partnership between the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Black Dog Institute has revealed that art therapy can significantly reduce anxiety in children aged 9–12. The Culture Dose for Kids program, delivered to over 540 parents and children across New South Wales, has shown measurable improvements in mental health and social connection.

Targeting families in areas deeply affected by natural disasters, the program fosters creativity and emotional exploration through art. Research led by the Black Dog Institute revealed that participants experienced a 29% decrease in anxiety and depression, as measured by parental evaluations, and a 15% reduction in self-reported scores by children.

The eight-week pilot program, held from May to June 2022, offered a structured yet flexible approach to improving emotional resilience. This is critical, as one in seven Australian children experience mental health challenges before age 14.

Art as a Pathway to Wellbeing

Culture Dose for Kids emphasizes family involvement, providing both children and parents with tools to navigate mental health challenges. Professor Katherine Boydell, lead investigator and director of the arts-based knowledge translation lab at the Black Dog Institute, highlighted the program’s innovative approach:

“With increasing social and environmental pressures, programs like Culture Dose for Kids offer creative, effective solutions. Art has the power to nourish and revive us, especially during challenging times.”

A Safe Space for Expression

Danielle Gullotta, senior access programs producer at the Art Gallery of NSW, shared insights into the program’s success:

“Our program creates a safe environment where participants can interpret art, express themselves, and process complex emotions. These findings underscore the importance of continuous engagement with art for youth mental health.”

Expanding Impact

Supported by the Jibb Foundation, Culture Dose for Kids demonstrates the transformative potential of art therapy. Advocates call for increased funding to expand its reach, particularly in disaster-affected communities.

As more families benefit from this innovative approach, art therapy proves to be a vital tool in addressing childhood anxiety, fostering resilience, and building stronger family connections.
