Why am I losing so much hair after having a baby? We have the answer!
Postpartum hair loss is as much an emotional issue as it is a physical one. During pregnancy you may have thicker hair due to increased levels of oestrogen, however, these levels decline after giving birth, which can lead to substantial hair loss. According to Sydney-based dermatologist specialist Dr Eleni Yiasemides, most women normally lose between 50-100 hairs a day.
But for many new mums, they may find themselves shedding more hair than usual, and it’s perfectly normal.
If you’re feeling self-conscious about your hair looking limp and lifeless, Dr Yiasemides suggests:
- Regular trims and a good daily routine.
- Volumising shampoos can help give hair a fuller effect. Parting hair on the side also helps to camouflage hair loss.
- Using treatments that reactivate hair follicles and stimulate hair regrowth like some over-the- counter treatments that include topical minoxidil 5% as the key ingredient.
- Seeking treatment as soon as you can. Most solutions are about retaining the hair you have. Speak with your healthcare professional before commencing any sort of treatment.
