Who are the Top Dogs and Cats in Australia?

Top Dog and Cat Breeds in Australia Revealed

Australia’s favourite pets have been unveiled by Bupa Pet Insurance, with the Cavoodle topping the list of dogs and the Domestic Short Hair named the top cat. The rankings, based on Bupa’s policy data, highlight a diverse range of popular breeds. Big dogs like Labradors, Border Collies, and Golden Retrievers join smaller favourites such as the Maltese Cross, French Bulldog, and Miniature Dachshund in the top 10.

For cats, Ragdolls, Tabbies, Burmese, and Domestic Short Hairs are among the most adored. National statistics show that Australia is home to approximately 28.7 million pets across 6.9 million households, with nearly half of these homes having a dog and a third having a cat.

Bupa General Insurance General Manager Lachlan Davidson notes that pets, whether dogs or cats, are cherished for their companionship and affection. “Aussies love their pets, and the variety in popular breeds reflects the diverse needs and lifestyles of pet owners,” Davidson said. He also highlighted the versatility of Cavoodles, who adapt well to various living environments, from spacious houses to cozy apartments.

Despite rising living costs, pet ownership remains strong, though a PetSure survey found that 21.5% of pet owners have cut back on preventive care. Bupa Pet Insurance data shows that common claims for dogs include gastrointestinal issues, skin allergies, and ear infections, while cats frequently face problems like injuries, gastrointestinal diseases, and dental issues.

Davidson urges pet owners to monitor their pets’ health. “Early treatment is crucial to avoid serious complications. With ongoing financial pressures, pet insurance can ease the burden of unexpected medical costs. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen a 10% increase in Bupa Pet Insurance policies,” he added.
