Sensory-Friendly & Autism-Friendly Movie Sessions

For children who prefer a gentler cinema experience

Many Australian cinemas offer sensory-friendly screenings designed for children who are autistic, sensory-sensitive, anxious in noisy environments, or littlies who simply prefer a more relaxed setting. These sessions typically feature:

  • Lower volume levels
  • Dimmed lights (not complete darkness)
  • No trailers or minimal pre-show ads
  • Freedom to move, vocalise or take a break
  • A welcoming, understanding environment for all neurodiverse families

Below is a quick guide to current providers and where to look for sessions in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA and the ACT.

  • Reading Cinemas (multiple states)
  • Ritz Randwick, Hayden Orpheum, Cremorne (NSW)
Check each cinema’s Facebook page or “Kids” or “Events” page for listings, as smaller operators update more flexibly.

💡 Tip for Parents

If your child requires extra support, call the cinema ahead — many venues will:

  • allow early entry to choose a comfortable seat,
  • help you position near an exit for breaks,
  • or suggest quieter session times.
