Dance Program Offers Big Benefits for Autistic Kids – Join the Trial!

Does your autistic child love to move—or want to build confidence doing so?

Monash University is inviting autistic children aged 7–12 to take part in a fun, inclusive dance program designed to support motor skills, friendships and wellbeing. Backed by research and led by expert psychologists and dance educators, this is a unique opportunity for families across Victoria.

Led by clinical psychologist Professor Nicole Rinehart and dance expert Dr Olivia Millard, the research aims to find out whether dance can improve not just motor skills, but also social, emotional and cognitive outcomes for autistic children.

“Many people don’t realise up to 80% of autistic children struggle with movement, which can make everyday activities and friendships harder,” said Professor Rinehart. “This program lets kids learn, connect and thrive—all in a fun, inclusive dance class.”

Classes are held at Monash’s Brain Park and Deakin University dance studios. Children will be paired with trained dance buddies and supported by inclusive teaching methods.

The trial is also exploring how programs like AllPlay Dance can reduce stress for families and become a long-term part of community life.
