Free bikes up for grabs: How families can join the Easter “Pedal Heist”

Looking for a fun (and free) school holiday activity? A nationwide bike “treasure hunt” is back this Easter — and families could win brand-new bikes just by solving clues and getting outdoors. The Pedal Heist returns this Easter with free bikes hidden across Australia. Here’s how families can join the daily treasure hunt and win.

What is the Pedal Heist (and how does it work)?

Think of it as a real-life treasure hunt on bikes.

Each day during the Easter school holidays (7–16 April), organisers hide several brand-new bikes in a city. A cryptic clue is posted on Instagram pointing to the secret location.

To win, participants need to:

  • Follow the daily clue online
  • Work out the location
  • Get there as quickly as possible
  • Unlock the bike using the correct code

👉 The first five people each day to crack the clue and open the lock win a free bike.

In total, 50 bikes are being given away across Australia and New Zealand.

Where and when is it happening?

The hunt moves to a different city each day:

  • 7 April – Sunshine Coast
  • 8 April – Brisbane
  • 9 April – Gold Coast
  • 10 April – Newcastle
  • 11 April – Sydney
  • 12 April – Canberra
  • 13 April – Melbourne
  • 14 April – Adelaide
  • 15 April – Perth
  • 16 April – Auckland

Why it’s a great idea for families

Beyond the chance to win, the Pedal Heist is a simple way to get kids moving and thinking.

  • Encourages problem-solving and teamwork
  • Gets everyone outdoors and active
  • Turns a regular day into an adventure
  • Reminds kids how fun bike riding can be

Cycling is also one of the few activities that’s free once you have the gear — no tickets, fuel or bookings required.

How to join in

Families can follow along via Instagram:

  • @pedalbikes_anz
  • @99bikes

Clues are released daily, so you can join for one day or try multiple locations if you’re travelling.

⚠️ Parent tips before you go

  • Check the distance and safety of the location before heading out
  • Expect a bit of competition — some clues are solved quickly
  • Bring helmets, water and a plan for younger kids
  • Treat it as fun first, not just about winning
