Deutsche Schule Melbourne is a German English bilingual school. Our school caters for families with German language connections, as well as those that are interested in providing their children with the opportunity to learn a second language from a very early age. We aim to prepare our students for their future as critically thinking global citizens. Through continued in-depth exposure to two languages and cultural contexts, we enable our students to reflect on their own culture as well as develop a strong understanding of the cultures of others. By offering a strong educational foundation, we aim to enable our students to transition into further education in Australia, Germany or internationally.
Our Primary School curriculum consists of the Victorian Curriculum with adaptations from the curriculum of the German state of Thuringia. Teaching is based on a one teacher-one language approach, in which teachers conduct classes and communicate with students in their native language. We refine student’s language skills to native speaker level, by immersing them in bicultural learning that leaves them equally comfortable communicating in either German or English. Students at DSM commence a two-year French language education program at the beginning of Grade 5. Deutsche Schule Melbourne is one of 135 German Schools Abroad as recognised by the ‘Central Agency for German Schools Abroad’.
It has been scientifically proven that a bilingual education provides an excellent basis for children’s learning. Growing up bilingually has benefits for children’s literacy and numeracy development, as well as for children’s understanding and experience of the world around them. The model of learning at the Deutsche Schule Melbourne (DSM) is clearly defined, well developed and supported, and highly regarded in Australia. The benefits of bilingualism to an individual and to society cannot be understated. Deutsche Schule Melbourne currently offers the Foundation Year to Year 6 and will expand into secondary school education from 2025.
